Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapy that helps people process and heal from traumatic memories by combining guided eye movements with focused attention on distressing experiences.

How Does EMDR Work?
Traumatic experiences are not always stored in the brain like ordinary memories. When this happens, they can resurface as distressing thoughts, flashbacks, or nightmares. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these experiences so they lose their intensity.
Whether through eye movements, gentle tapping, or holding “buzzies” that alternate vibrations, EMDR uses bilateral stimulation to mimic the brain’s REM sleep process. This allows painful memories to be reprocessed in a safe, structured way, easing trauma symptoms.
Who Can Benefit from EMDR?
EMDR can be helpful for those who:
- Experience symptoms of trauma or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
- Struggle with anxiety, panic, or intense fear related to past events
- Deal with depression, grief, or unresolved emotional pain
- Have phobias or strong, persistent negative beliefs about themselves
- Experience lingering effects from accidents, abuse, or other distressing experiences
By safely reprocessing traumatic memories, EMDR helps reduce the emotional harm and distressing symptoms of lingering trauma.
